Even 3 layers was a more crude result, 4 was almost like looking at a real cap. I bet if I were to get one single layer of .2 it would be too thick to punch and fold but that's just a guess it might be just right.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938074.post-51387218478648505152023-05-02T12:54:12.336-04:002023-05-02T12:54:12.336-04:00Thanks. At least that's the impression I get from looking at the pictures. The frame and cylinder say "1860", the flat sided and octagon barrel assembly say "1851". I've never handled one, much less compared to an 1860 or 1851 in person, just the pics. I keep thinking I need an 1851 Navy (in original 36 caliber) to go with my 1860 Army, but needs outweigh wants so that ain't happened yet. I like the look of that front sight. Just use it as a range rod (ie: not fit to the rifle) since the rifle's a range rifle anyway due to lack of hunting opportunities here. Whippy, but not likely to break at least. Have you tried seasoning your ramrods? I like to put the dowel in a 1/2" PVC pipe and pour a boiled linseed oil/turpentine mix in to more than cover it, the cap and let is sit for a few weeks/months. The dowel soaks up the oil/turpentine and that seems to really help toughen it up. The area below his folks' place had been cleared off by men with bill hooks a few days prior. Thorny bushes were laying all over and made accessing the low hanging nest quite difficult, but we got there. We only had an old pump type poison sprayer and some Baygon liquid for the same. He got up close and started pumping and I started shaking the branch the nest was on - and nothing happened. Then we saw the other side of the nest was caved in, probably by the crew that had cleared the area. Instead of going the long way around to get back up to his folks' place we decided to climb the 15 foot or so cliff. My cousin went first, carrying the pump. I was behind and a little neighbor boy behind me. My cousin reached the top, tossed the pump over the edge and pulled himself up to throw his leg over the side and yelled "Jump!" We all landed near each other and crouched there. I'd NO idea WHY he'd yelled jump but knew him well enough to ask "How high?" on the way up, or to try to land carefully on the way down with no questions asked. It turned out he'd tossed that pump right into a swarm of africanized honey bees. They swarmed around us and finally one stung one of us. That released pheromones and the swarm got REALLY aggravated. Somehow we didn't notice those thorn bushes on the ground on our way out of the area! Lost my rubber thong sandal and we had to wait a while before going back for it. Anyway, collecting wasp nests can be exciting!

Does the wasp spray you used contain oils? That's something to keep in mind if you plan to use it in cartridges or shells. You don't want any oils messing up your powder charge!Paulhttp://paulmoreland.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938074.post-90217251435201123552022-10-25T17:33:24.030-04:002022-10-25T17:33:24.030-04:00Thanks, Paul! Thanks, Paul!Dave Markowitzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00543441083086479631noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7938074.post-27517645991002623362022-10-25T14:32:14.078-04:002022-10-25T14:32:14.078-04:00Congratulations on a fine hunt! By the way, that tow looks a lot like the fiber used as an over powder wad in Brazil. Never thought of using it on a worm to scrub the barrel, but DID learn it's a bad idea to use it as an over SHOT wad - blows the pattern clear into a doughnut shape leaving a gap almost anything can slip through uninjured. But I digress. It all comes back to purpose/bullet/load. When we lived in the Amazon Basin my most used projectile was a Lyman wadcutter cast from whatever I could scrounge and lubed with my stingless bees' wax lube concoction. That slug over a 22 LR case of Especial de Caça gave a very useful target load and didn't tear up small game - but killed them right there. It was a bit under powered for serious use on larger stuff, but that was the only failing. For serious use I had my choice of other projectiles, mostly home cast but a few jacketed hollow points made their way down. Thankfully they were never needed.

The 357 opens a new window to versatility, at the cost of a more rambunctious personality. With heavier loads it barks annoyingly but recoil is quite manageable in medium to large framed resolvers. When traveling up north I often borrow a certain Ruger Old Model Blackhawk, but end up shooting mostly 38 specials through it. I keep telling myself I "need" a 357 of my own, but find myself looking for another 38 instead.

On the "someday" shortlist is a Winchester 92 clone in 357. I can see a REAL utility in such an arm as the 357 in the longer barrel is much more mild mannered and polite. It also has a lot of power to impart, shooters who know rate it close or even equal to the 30 WCF - in a handier, more compact package. It works great in anything from 22 LR to 38 SPL in size, making for a near perfect packing pistol for most situations one might find one's self in. At first it looked weird, then I remembered - it's for a southpaw, then it made sense. :-D Keep an eye on the rounds in the loops, some leather's quite bad about generating verdigris. Finding a way to anchor it to your belt or side would be good, keep it from riding up when you draw. I used to have a shoulder rig for my 6" Rossi, it allowed for one to rock it forward on the draw to give a less vertical removal of the gun from the holster. Never tried one like what you've got there. Definitely looking forward to your thoughts on it as you give it a good workout.Paulhttp://paulmoreland.comnoreply@blogger.com
