Post-Cleaning Borescope of the Brown Bess
I ran out to Lowe's yesterday and bought a 5 foot section of 2" PVC pipe, and a couple caps. After degreasing the barrel, I soaked it overnight in Evaporust inside the pipe. After a little scrubbing this morning, this is what the inside looks like:

If you want to do a full bore third world country fix on that piece, run a brake cylinder hone through there to polish out the high spots, then braze a few layers of mild steel wire around the breech end of the barrel for about a foot to a foot and a half. She'll be good to go for another 200 years with reasonable care. :-)
Groan.
Actually, I think I'm going to fire lap it with my test firing: 100 grains of 2Fg and a patched round ball. But instead of lube, put JB Bore Paste on the patch.
